Scottish Social Services Council and the Care Commission

All services providing Day Care of Children and Childminding Services are considered to be part of Social Services.

Early Years and Childcare workers in Day Care of Children’s Services, as registered with the Care Commission,  are required to register with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) as a day care of children service worker, and agree to adhere to the Code of Practice.  You will find further information about this as you progress through the career pathway.

Childminders are required to register with the Care Commission as an individual Day of Children Service. They are not therefore required to register with the SSSC.

There will be a rigorous and thorough recruitment and selection process for all those working in Childhood Practice to ensure that only people who have the appropriate knowledge and skills and who are suitable to provide social services, are allowed to enter the workforce.  References will be taken up and an enhanced disclosure check with Disclosure Scotland will be carried out prior to employment.

Childminders will also have to provide the Care Commission with evidence of suitability for their job as above.
